A mission was established in Borrowash at the turn of the 20th century, served from St Mary’s Derby. Mass was said in an upper room at the Wilmot Arms Inn from 1896 until 1909 and then in a variety of locations until a permanent parish was formed and the church opened in June 1959.
The Nottingham Diocesan Yearbook for 1960 says that an architect parishioner designed the church for no fee and other parishioners carried out all the internal and external decoration, as well as providing altar linen and vestments. A more complete history is available on the parish website.
St Hugh’s parish includes the communities of Spondon, Borrowash, Draycott, Ockbrook, Church Wilne and the surrounding areas. There masses said on a regular midweek schedule and at 9.30am each Sunday. The Sunday mass has a childrens liturgy for younger children and refreshments are available in the parish hall afterwards. There are lots of activities going on in our parish which you will be most welcome to become involved in.
We have a large parish hall available for hire which includes sprung dance floor and a bar area for which a temporary licence can be obtained for if required. There is also good sized meeting room.
